VII Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions opened in the capital
Today, the 7th Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions began its work in the capital's Palace of Independence, Kazinform reports.
The main topic of the Congress is defined as "The role of the leaders of world and traditional religions in the spiritual and social development of mankind in the post-pandemic period."
On the eve of the VII Congress, on September 13, the XX meeting of the Secretariat of the Congress was held under the chairmanship of the Speaker of the Senate of the Parliament of Kazakhstan, head of the Secretariat of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions Maulen Ashimbayev.
The visit of Pope Francis, Supreme Imam of al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed at-Tayeb, Ashkenazi Rabbi of Israel David Lau is a feature of the upcoming religious forum.
Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev will deliver a welcoming speech. Heads of delegations are also expected to speak at the congress.
Within the framework of the congress, it is planned to consider a number of topical thematic blocks, presented in the format of sectional meetings of the forum.
Thus, section sessions of the congress will be held in four areas: "The role of religions in strengthening spiritual and moral values in the modern world", "The role of education and religious enlightenment in strengthening the respectful coexistence of religions and cultures, justice and peace", "The contribution of religious leaders and politicians in promoting global inter-religious dialogue and peace, countering extremism, radicalism and terrorism, especially on religious grounds”, “Women’s contribution to the well-being and sustainable development of society and the role of religious communities in supporting the social status of women”.
According to the program of the event, the awarding ceremony of the Astana International Prize for Contribution to Interreligious Dialogue and the Medal of Honor of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions will be held.
The congress is attended by 108 delegations from 50 countries of the world, including spiritual leaders of world and traditional religions from Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism, Taoism, Zoroastrianism, Shintoism, as well as political and public figures, representatives of international organizations, the expert community.
A large number of representatives and foreign media arrived in the capital of Kazakhstan. According to official figures, about 200 foreign journalists have registered, including representatives of Euronews, BBC, CNN, Bloomberg, Al Jazeera and others.
Pope Francis arrived in Kazakhstan on September 13 in the afternoon.
The President of the Republic of Kazakhstan met Pope Francis at the Nur-Sultan International Airport.
The solemn ceremony of welcoming Pope Francis took place in Akorda.
Later, the Pope met with representatives of civil society and the diplomatic corps at the Central Cinema and Concert Hall "Kazakhstan" and delivered a speech. The event was attended by the Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
In his speech, the Pontifex expressed satisfaction with his apostolic visit to the ancient Kazakh land. As Pope Francis said, he came here as a pilgrim of peace in order to seek dialogue and unity.
As part of the official visit of the Pope during the Congress, a large-scale religious mass is expected to be held in the capital today - the main liturgical service in the Latin rite of the Roman Catholic Church.
Representatives of any religion and denomination will be able to attend Mass. In total, about three thousand pilgrims from around the world will take part in the prayer service. The event will take place on the territory of the international exhibition center EXPO on the square in front of the Nur Alem pavilion.
