The document presupposes interaction between the parties in organizing hydrogen filling stations (HFS) for vehicles with a hydrogen engine, as well as providing the HFS with hydrogen of appropriate quality from the existing units of Air Liquide Munai Tech Gases LLP at the Atyrau Refinery. This technology will be presented for the first time in Kazakhstan.

The pilot project includes two stages. At the first stage, by the end of March 2022, it is planned to install a mobile hydrogen filling station in Atyrau, as well as to purchase buses and light vehicles powered by hydrogen engines for the transportation of ANPZ employees.

As part of the second stage, by the end of 2022, together with Air Liquide Munai Tech Gases LLP, it is planned to complete a set of works to provide the gas station with hydrogen of appropriate quality and to launch a stationary hydrogen filling station in Atyrau.

“In accordance with the instruction of the Head of State to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 and generally following global trends, KazMunayGas considers the development of hydrogen energy as one of the priority areas of the company's decarbonization program in the long term. Reducing the carbon footprint from the activities of companies contributes not only to an increase in the value of assets, but also increases our investment attractiveness,” said Alik Aidarbayev, Chairman of the Management Board of KMG.

Currently, KMG is updating the development strategy for 2022-2031 and approved the Low-Carbon Development Program. KMG has set a goal to reduce CO2 emissions by 15% by 2031 from the level of 2019, which is about 1.6 million tons of CO2.

Achievement of this goal is planned through the implementation of measures in the field of energy efficiency and energy saving, the development of renewable and hydrogen energy, the use of technologies for capturing and storing carbon, the implementation of forest climate projects. And now KMG is starting the practical implementation of a pilot project in the field of hydrogen mobility to increase the company's potential in this area and use the produced hydrogen at its own assets.

Hydrogen fuel is an environmentally friendly alternative to gasoline and diesel because the main by-product of its use is water. In addition, hydrogen has a much lower consumption than gasoline - only 0.6 kg per 100 km. The hydrogen filling station consists of a hydrogen storage system, cooling, compression, and dispensing devices.

The partner of the project, the world-renowned French company Air Liquide, has mastered the entire hydrogen supply chain over the past 50 years: from production to storage, distribution, and development of applications for end users. Currently, the company has designed and installed more than 120 hydrogen filling stations around the world.
