Where did COVID-19 come from?
The BBC has reported that an international team of scientists has published the results of their research on the release of Covid-19. They named two different causes of the virus, which has killed 4 million people. First, the virus was transmitted to humans from animals. Second, this virus was accidentally spread from the laboratory of the Institute of Virology in Wuhan, China. It is believed that the staff of this laboratory may be engaged in the creation of a dangerous virus using genetic engineering.
A team of scientists studying the causes of the spread of the Covid-19 virus was led by the world's leading virologist, Professor Edward Holmes. The group includes scientists from Great Britain, China, the United States and other countries.
The researchers compared Sars-Cov-2 with four other well-studied viruses. These viruses are found only in animals. However, it is not known where they came from or under what circumstances they evolved from animal to human. Another unknown question is that no animal with a virus similar to Covid-19 has been found, although it has been more than a year since Covid appeared. According to scientists, this may also be evidence of the laboratory nature of the coronavirus.
Animals carrying coronavirus infection have not been fully tested. For instance, raccoon dogs could not be tested. They were found to be able to carry the coronavirus and were sold in Wuhan markets.
Scientists around the world still do not know the source of the Ebola virus, hepatitis C, polio and many other pathogens other than coronavirus. However, there is no concrete evidence that the laboratory of the Institute of Virology in Wuhan worked with coronaviruses.
According to the BBC, in March 2020, all employees of the laboratory were tested for the presence of antibodies to the virus. They had no antibodies at all. Scientists are still working to determine the cause of the virus.
